Elena Bashkirova is a Russian-born pianist internationally recognized for her interpretations of composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Shostakovich. Her playing is often described as possessing intellectual clarity, a refined touch, and a deeply considered approach to phrasing, frequently highlighting the structural integrity of the musical work. She is also noted for her chamber music collaborations and dedication to contemporary music.

The concert on May 25th, 2027 will take place within the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford. Designed by Christopher Wren and completed in 1684, the Sheldonian serves as the official ceremonial hall of the University of Oxford. While primarily used for academic ceremonies – including degree conferrals and Encaenia – it also functions as a concert venue due to its unique acoustics and architectural features. The theatre’s painted ceiling depicts allegorical representations of art and science, contributing to its distinctive atmosphere.

Originally intended as a replacement for the University Church as a venue for academic events, the Sheldonian’s design was influenced by ancient Roman theatres. Its semi-circular arrangement provides relatively intimate viewing for audiences despite its considerable size; it can accommodate approximately 800 people.
