Classical Concerts in Oxford
Experience Víkingur Ólafsson live on September 9th
Víkingur Ólafsson is a critically acclaimed Icelandic pianist known for his thoughtful and often unconventional interpretations of classical repertoire, alongside explorations of contemporary and minimalist composers like Philip Glass and Max Richter. His performances are characterised by a distinctive clarity of touch, dynamic control, and a willingness to juxtapose familiar works with lesser-known pieces, often exploring thematic connections across centuries. He frequently releases meticulously curated albums that present cohesive musical narratives.
The concert will take place at the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, a recently established institution at the University of Oxford. Officially opened in May 2024, the Centre aims to foster interdisciplinary research and engagement with the humanities through a combination of academic programmes, public events, and performance spaces. The building itself is a significant architectural project, transforming the former Examination Schools complex – historic buildings dating back to the 19th century – into a modern hub for humanities scholarship. Its design integrates historic fabric with contemporary additions, creating adaptable spaces for lectures, seminars, exhibitions and performances. The Centre’s concert hall is designed to provide an intimate setting for musical events.
