Elena Bashkirova is a highly respected Russian-American pianist, renowned for her deeply insightful and technically brilliant interpretations of a wide-ranging repertoire. Born in Moscow, she studied at the Central Music School and later with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, shaping a stylistic approach characterized by clarity, intellectual rigor, and emotional depth.
Bashkirova is particularly celebrated for her championing of 20th and 21st-century composers, notably Alfred Schnittke – she was his wife and a crucial interpreter of his work – but also Ligeti, Penderecki, and Glass. She’s equally adept at the classical canon, performing extensively Bach, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms.
A founding member of the Lockenhaus Chamber Festival with Gidon Kremer and Isaac Stern, she has collaborated with numerous leading musicians. Bashkirova has held teaching positions at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London and currently teaches at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid. Her discography includes critically acclaimed recordings of Schnittke’s piano sonatas and concertos alongside chamber music works. She continues to perform internationally as a soloist and chamber musician.
