Xi Zhai will perform at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany on September 13, 2026. Zhai is a Chinese-born composer and pianist known for her contemporary classical music that often blends minimalist influences with elements of traditional Chinese musical aesthetics. Her compositions frequently explore themes of memory, displacement, and the intersection of cultures, utilizing prepared piano techniques and extended instrumental effects to create unique sonic textures. She has received recognition for works like “…and rivers…” and “…and mountains…”, noted for their evocative atmospheres and innovative approach to piano writing.

The Elbphilharmonie itself is a landmark concert hall situated in the HafenCity district of Hamburg. Opened in January 2017 after a decade of construction and significant cost overruns, it was designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. Built atop an existing warehouse structure (the Kaispeicher A), the building’s distinctive glass façade and wave-like roof are iconic features. The hall is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, achieved through the design work of Yasuhisa Toyota.
