Experience Xi Zhai

Xi Zhai is a Chinese-born, Brooklyn-based composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist forging a unique path in contemporary music. Trained classically in piano from age five, she transitioned to jazz studies at the New England Conservatory of Music before developing her signature sound – a compelling blend of avant-garde jazz, electronic music, and elements of Chinese folk traditions.

Zhai’s discography includes critically acclaimed albums like *Against All Gods* (2018) and *Hologram* (2023), both released on Biye Records. *Hologram*, particularly, garnered widespread praise for its intricate arrangements and exploration of identity and displacement. She frequently incorporates processed vocals, prepared piano techniques, and live looping into her performances, creating immersive sonic landscapes.

Beyond her solo work, Zhai has collaborated with artists like Caroline Shaw and Theo Bleckmann. She was a 2021-2022 Artist-in-Residence at National Sawdust and has received commissions from organizations including Bang on a Can Fellowship. Her compositions are noted for their emotional depth, textural complexity, and innovative use of technology to bridge cultural boundaries.
