Grigory Sokolov will perform a solo piano recital at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany on April 26, 2027. Sokolov is renowned for his intensely individual and deeply considered interpretations, eschewing extensive recording in favor of prioritizing the live concert experience. His playing is characterized by a remarkable control of tonal color, a profound understanding of structure, and a willingness to take risks in phrasing and dynamics. He frequently programs works that span several centuries, often juxtaposing composers in unexpected ways. He is known for avoiding encores, believing the chosen program should stand as a complete artistic statement.

The Elbphilharmonie, inaugurated in January 2017, is a concert hall in the HafenCity district of Hamburg. Built atop an existing warehouse structure (the Kaispeicher A), its distinctive glass facade and undulating roofline have made it an architectural landmark. The hall’s acoustics were designed by Yasuhisa Toyota, aiming for a “white canvas” sound – neutral and adaptable to various musical genres. It houses the Grand Hall (capable of seating 2,100 people) and the smaller Recital Hall.
