Classical Concerts in Oxford
Experience Paul Lewis live on July 27th
Paul Lewis is a British pianist internationally recognised for his deeply thoughtful and insightful interpretations of classical repertoire, particularly the works of Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. His playing is noted for its clarity, structural understanding, and emotional restraint, avoiding overt romanticism in favour of revealing the architecture within the compositions. He frequently performs solo recitals and chamber music globally, and is a Gramophone Award winner.
The Sheldonian Theatre, the venue for this concert, is a prominent landmark in Oxford and part of the University of Oxford’s estate. Designed by Christopher Wren and completed in 1669, it serves as the official ceremonial hall of the University. While used for academic ceremonies like Encaenia and Matriculation, it also hosts concerts due to its unique acoustic properties.
Originally intended as a replacement for the University Church as a venue for degree ceremonies, its architectural design incorporates a distinctive cupola. The theatre's interior features painted panels on the walls depicting scenes from the history of the University and portraits of monarchs. Its wooden construction contributes to a warm resonance favoured by musicians performing chamber music and solo instrumental works. The space accommodates approximately 800 attendees.
