Experience Nikola Meeuwsen live on April 29th
Nikola Meeuwsen, a Dutch composer and performer specializing in the glass harmonica, will present a concert at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg on April 29, 2027. Meeuwsen’s work frequently centers around the unique sonic qualities of the glass harmonica – an instrument Benjamin Franklin invented – often incorporating extended techniques and exploring its ethereal and subtly complex timbres. Her compositions blend historical performance practice with contemporary sound worlds, often incorporating electronics and improvisation alongside traditionally notated scores. She frequently collaborates with ensembles and artists across various disciplines.
The Elbphilharmonie itself opened in January 2017 after a decade of construction and significant cost overruns. Built atop a historic warehouse (the Kaispeicher A) in Hamburg’s HafenCity district, it has quickly become a landmark architectural achievement and a prominent concert venue. The building's design, by Herzog & de Meuron, features a distinctive glass façade designed to reflect light and the surrounding harbor environment.
The Grand Hall within the Elbphilharmonie is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, achieved through the work of Yasuhisa Toyota, who employed vineyard-style seating arrangements to bring the audience closer to the orchestra and enhance sound reflection.
