Jan Chalupecky will perform at the Národní Divadlo (National Theatre) in Prague, Czechia on November 29, 2026. Chalupecky is a contemporary Czech composer known for his work blending elements of minimalist music, post-dramatic theatre, and often incorporating extended vocal techniques and unconventional instrumentation. His compositions frequently explore themes of memory, identity, and the relationship between sound and space, often described as atmospheric and emotionally resonant. He has received commissions from numerous ensembles internationally and is considered a significant voice in current Czech new music.
The Národní Divadlo holds a central place in Czech culture and history. Originally built through public subscription in the late 19th century, it opened in 1881 with Bedřich Smetana’s opera *Prodaná nevěsta* (*The Bartered Bride*). The original building was tragically destroyed by fire in 1882, prompting a renewed national fundraising effort for its reconstruction. The current neo-Renaissance building, designed by Josef Mocker, opened in 1883. It serves as a symbol of Czech national identity and artistic achievement, housing opera, ballet, and drama companies.
