Experience Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester live on September 18th
Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, renowned for its performances of late-Romantic and early 20th-century orchestral repertoire, will perform at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg on September 18, 2026. The orchestra, founded in 1992 by Claudio Abbado, specifically focuses on providing a platform for young musicians aged 16-26, offering them intensive orchestral training and performance experience under leading conductors. Their programming typically features large-scale symphonic works, often those by Mahler himself, alongside compositions by composers like Bruckner, Shostakovich and Strauss – pieces demanding both technical proficiency and mature musical interpretation.
The Elbphilharmonie, opened in January 2017 after a decade of construction and significant cost overruns, is a landmark concert hall built atop an old warehouse (Kaispeicher A) in the HafenCity district of Hamburg. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, it is celebrated for its distinctive glass facade and acoustically optimized “Grand Hall” (“Großer Saal”). The building’s design intentionally blends historical preservation with modern architectural innovation.
