The English Chamber Orchestra will perform at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford on September 25, 2026. While maintaining a core strength in standard orchestral works, the ensemble frequently explores lesser-known compositions and collaborates with diverse soloists. Formed in 1967 by Colin Lawson and David Blum, it quickly gained prominence for its refined sound and flexible instrumentation.

The University Church of St Mary the Virgin serves as the official church of Oxford University and holds a significant place in the city’s history. Construction began around 1320, evolving from an earlier Norman church on the site. Its iconic spire, completed in 1440, became a landmark visible across Oxford. Throughout its history, the church has been closely linked to academic life; sermons and university notices were traditionally read from its pulpit.
