Experience Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra live on August 20th

The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra will perform at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany on August 20, 2026. This ensemble is comprised of Ukrainian musicians – many former members of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, the Kyiv National Opera, and the Lviv National Philharmonic – who had to flee their homeland following the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022. Their repertoire spans classical and contemporary works, often featuring pieces by Ukrainian composers alongside established European masters. The orchestra aims to present a message of resilience and hope through its performances, embodying the spirit of Ukrainian artistic expression amidst conflict.

The Elbphilharmonie itself opened in January 2017 after a decade of construction and significant cost overruns. Built atop an historic warehouse (the Kaispeicher A) in Hamburg’s HafenCity district, it has become a landmark architectural achievement. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, its distinctive glass structure houses a concert hall with exceptional acoustics. The “Elphi,” as it’s commonly known, is notable for its “Plaza,” a public viewing platform offering panoramic city views accessible independently from the concert halls.
