Opened in 1929, it was built by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) as a memorial to the women and men who fought in the American Revolution. Initially conceived as a meeting place and performance space for the DAR, it quickly became a prominent venue for a wide range of artistic performances, including concerts, lectures, and theatrical productions.
