Shannon Barnett, an Australian-born double bassist and composer, will perform at the Kölner Philharmonie in Cologne, Germany on December 26, 2026. Barnett’s musical style blends elements of jazz, improvisation, and contemporary classical music. She is known for her extended techniques on the double bass, utilizing harmonics, percussive sounds, and looping to create richly textured and evocative soundscapes. The Kölner Philharmonie, inaugurated in 1986, is a major concert hall in Cologne and home to the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra (Gürzenich-Orchester Köln). Designed by architect Gustav Semper, it’s renowned for its acoustics and modern architectural design. The hall features a large main hall seating approximately 1,900 people and a smaller chamber music hall. It replaced the previous Gürzenich concert hall which had been destroyed during World War II. Throughout its history, the Kölner Philharmonie has hosted a diverse range of performances including orchestral concerts, chamber music recitals, and contemporary music events featuring prominent international artists.
