Shannon Barnett is an Australian bassist, composer, and improviser rapidly gaining international recognition for her distinctive approach to the instrument. Originally from Brisbane, she honed her skills studying at the Queensland Conservatorium before relocating to New York City in 2016 to pursue advanced studies at the Manhattan School of Music.
Barnett’s style blends elements of jazz, contemporary improvisation, and experimental music, often incorporating extended techniques and prepared bass. She’s a highly sought-after sideman, performing with artists like Vijay Iyer, Mark Guiliana, and Tyshawn Sorey.
Her debut album, *Heavy* (2023), released on Biplane Records, received widespread critical acclaim for its innovative compositions and virtuosic playing. It was featured in publications like *DownBeat* and *The Wire*. Prior to this, she released the EP *Shifting Sands* (2019). Barnett is also a dedicated educator, leading workshops and masterclasses globally.
