Seattle Symphony is a fully professional orchestra recognized for its commitment to contemporary repertoire alongside standard orchestral works. The ensemble frequently commissions new pieces and champions diverse voices in classical music, while maintaining a strong tradition of performing the core composers of the orchestral canon. They are known for a rich sound and dynamic performances under the artistic leadership of their Music Director.
Taper Auditorium, located within Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Washington, serves as the primary performance space for the Seattle Symphony. Completed in 1998, Benaroya Hall was designed by architect Robert M. Swerdon and acoustician Russell Johnson, with a specific focus on achieving exceptional sound quality for orchestral performances. The auditorium’s design incorporates adjustable acoustics allowing for flexibility in presentation depending on the musical requirements.
The hall replaced the aging Seattle Opera House as the city’s premier performance venue and was named in honor of local philanthropist Jack Taper and his family, who contributed significantly to its construction. It features a vineyard-style seating arrangement intended to bring audience members closer to the orchestra and enhance the immersive experience. The auditorium has a capacity of approximately 2,700 seats.
