Ricarda Merbeth, a German composer and performer, will present a concert at Musiikkitalo in Helsinki on January 19, 2027. Merbeth’s work is generally characterized by its exploration of vocal performance extended techniques, often incorporating experimental and contemporary classical elements. Her compositions frequently feature extended vocalizations, microtonality, and a focus on the physicality of sound production, moving beyond traditional song structures. Musiikkitalo, Helsinki’s concert hall, opened in 2011 and serves as the home of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Designed by LPR Architects, the building is notable for its wooden interior construction – a significant undertaking given its scale – aiming to enhance acoustics and create a warm atmosphere. The hall comprises two primary venues: the larger Concert Hall seating approximately 1,700 people and the smaller Paavo Jarvi Hall with a capacity of around 500. Musiikkitalo was built on the site of the former Finlandia Hall’s concert space and represents a substantial investment in Finland’s musical infrastructure, intended to provide an optimal environment for both orchestral performances and diverse contemporary music presentations.
