The Elbphilharmonie itself opened in January 2017 after a decade of construction and significant cost overruns. Built atop an existing warehouse – the Kaispeicher A – it has quickly become a landmark architectural achievement and a major cultural venue. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the concert hall’s distinctive glass facade and wave-like roof are intended to reflect light and the movement of water, referencing Hamburg’s port history.

The hall’s acoustics were designed by Yasuhisa Toyota, prioritizing natural reverberation and clarity. It seats approximately 2,100 people and features a “Grand Hall” specifically engineered for orchestral music as well as smaller recital spaces. The building also incorporates a public plaza offering panoramic views of the city and harbor.
