Its architectural design, by Herzog & de Meuron, integrates a striking glass structure above the brick base, creating a landmark building. The concert hall within is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics, achieved through the “White Skin” design by Yasuhisa Toyota – a system of individually shaped gypsum fiber panels.

The hall’s vineyard-style seating arrangement places the audience closer to the orchestra, fostering a more intimate connection. Beyond its primary function as a concert venue for the Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and visiting ensembles like the Munich Philharmonic, the building also houses a hotel and residential apartments, contributing to its multifaceted role within Hamburg’s cultural landscape.
