The Vanguard is a well-established live music venue located in Newtown, New South Wales. Originally opened in 1993 as the Sandringham Hotel’s entertainment space, it underwent significant renovations following a fire in 2001 and reopened as The Vanguard Theatre in 2003. The venue is known for its intimate setting – holding approximately 250 patrons – and its focus on showcasing diverse musical acts including jazz, blues, rock and alternative performances. It has hosted both emerging artists and established names throughout its history and maintains a reputation for quality sound and a supportive atmosphere for performers. The building itself features art deco architecture reflective of its original hotel construction period.
