Helen Sung, a contemporary jazz pianist and composer, will perform at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia on October 22, 2026. The State Theatre opened in 1929 as a lavish movie palace during the height of the atmospheric theatre movement. Designed by Henry Eli White, the theatre was intended to evoke a sense of an opulent indoor Spanish courtyard. Notable for its intricate plasterwork, ornate ceilings, and grand scale, it hosted premieres and screenings for decades. Over time it transitioned from primarily film screenings to hosting live performances including opera, ballet, musical theatre, concerts and comedy shows. The venue underwent significant restoration work in the 1980s to preserve its original architectural features while upgrading facilities for modern performances.
