Maxim Emelyanychev, a Russian-born countertenor renowned for his interpretations of Baroque and early Classical repertoire, will perform at City Halls, Glasgow on September 25th, 2026. Emelyanychev’s vocal style is characterized by agility, expressive ornamentation, and a distinctive timbre, often performing works originally written for castrati. He frequently collaborates with period instrument ensembles, prioritizing historically informed performance practice. Beyond operatic roles, he is also known for concert performances of oratorios and cantatas.
City Halls opened in 1909 as a municipal building housing Glasgow Corporation’s offices. Designed by William Binnie Simpson, the building exhibits a neoclassical architectural style with prominent Corinthian columns. While initially serving administrative functions, the Great Hall was designed with acoustics suitable for musical performances from its inception.
Following local government reorganization in the 1970s, City Halls transitioned into a dedicated arts venue. It underwent significant refurbishment in the early 2000s to enhance its facilities as a concert hall and event space. The venue now hosts a diverse programme encompassing classical music, jazz, world music and other genres; it is recognised as an important cultural hub within Glasgow and Scotland.
