Marin Alsop will perform at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Gateshead on November 20, 2026. Alsop is renowned as a conductor celebrated for her interpretations of 20th and 21st-century American composers, particularly those of Leonard Bernstein, and for championing the work of female composers. Her conducting style is often described as dynamic and emotionally expressive, with a commitment to accessibility and community engagement. She previously served as the music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, and holds the title of Principal Conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The Glasshouse, opening in late 2025, represents a significant investment in musical infrastructure for the North East of England. It consolidates The Sage Gateshead and The Baltic Centre into a single, purpose-built venue designed by David Chipperfield Architects. The complex features two concert halls – a 1,300-seat auditorium and a more intimate 450-seat hall – alongside learning spaces and public areas. The project aims to enhance Gateshead’s reputation as a cultural destination and provide facilities for both professional musicians and community music participation.
