The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, renowned for its historically informed interpretations and dedication to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach – a composer deeply connected to Leipzig’s musical history – will perform at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg on June 7, 2027. The orchestra’s sound is characterized by clarity, precision, and a focus on bringing out the contrapuntal structures inherent in Baroque and Classical repertoire, while also maintaining a strong tradition in later German composers. Founded in 1743, it boasts a lineage including performances under Felix Mendelssohn, who significantly shaped its profile.

The Elbphilharmonie itself opened in January 2017 and quickly became a landmark building and prominent concert venue. Constructed atop a historic warehouse (the Kaispeicher A) in Hamburg’s HafenCity district, its design by Herzog & de Meuron incorporates a striking glass façade built around the existing brick structure. The Grand Hall, where the Gewandhaus Orchestra will perform, is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics achieved through the “White Skin” – a sculpted interior surface designed by Yasuhisa Toyota. The hall's vineyard-style seating arrangement contributes to an intimate connection between performers and audience.
