Kateřina Kněžíková is a Czech composer and pianist whose work frequently blends contemporary classical music with elements of minimalism, jazz harmony, and often incorporates improvisation. Her compositions are known for their atmospheric quality, exploring textures and emotional depth through extended techniques and a sensitive approach to timbre. She often performs solo piano works alongside pieces featuring chamber ensembles.
The concert will be held at Smetana Hall within the Municipal House (Obecní dům) in Prague. Completed in 1912, the Municipal House was built as a representative cultural centre intended to rival Vienna’s Burgtheater. Designed in the Art Nouveau style by a collective of leading Czech artists, it showcases elaborate ornamentation and national artistic motifs.
Smetana Hall itself is the largest hall within the complex and is renowned for its exceptional acoustics. The hall’s design was heavily influenced by Gustav Mahler, who consulted on its acoustic properties during construction. Its gilded interiors, murals by Alphonse Mucha, and overall grandeur contribute to its status as one of Europe's most beautiful concert venues. The hall regularly hosts orchestral concerts, chamber music performances, and other significant cultural events, maintaining its position as a focal point for musical life in Prague.
