Karina Canellakis will conduct a performance at Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts in Pittsburgh on October 23, 2026. Canellakis is a conductor and violinist known for her interpretations of both standard repertoire and contemporary works. Her conducting style is often described as possessing clarity, energy, and a meticulous attention to detail, frequently highlighting the individual voices within an orchestra while maintaining a cohesive overall sound. She has gained recognition for her performances of Romantic-era symphonies alongside lesser-known 20th and 21st-century compositions.
Heinz Hall, originally the Loew’s Penn Theatre, opened in 1927 as a movie palace during the height of the atmospheric theatre movement. Designed by William H. Gable, it showcased ornate architectural detailing intended to transport audiences to a 16th-century Venetian courtyard. After years of declining attendance as a cinema, the building was saved from demolition in 1971 by the Pittsburgh Symphony Society and meticulously renovated specifically for orchestral performance. It became the permanent home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and has since hosted numerous national and international touring acts across various genres, remaining a significant landmark in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District.
