Karina Canellakis is a highly acclaimed American conductor and violinist rapidly establishing herself as a leading figure in the classical music world. Born in New York City in 1981, she initially gained recognition as a celebrated violinist, graduating from Juilliard and performing as concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. However, a shoulder injury prompted a pivotal career shift towards conducting.
Canellakis studied conducting with David Zinman and Leonard Slatkin, quickly demonstrating exceptional talent. She served as Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra (2016-2019), achieving critical acclaim for her dynamic interpretations and insightful programming. Currently, she holds the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (since 2023) and is Artistic Advisor to the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin.
Known for her compelling stage presence and meticulous preparation, Canellakis’ repertoire spans Baroque to contemporary works. She's frequently invited to conduct major international orchestras including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Vienna Philharmonic.
