Experience György Ligeti live on May 9th
On May 9, 2027, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg will host a concert dedicated to the works of György Ligeti. Ligeti (1923-2006) was a Hungarian-Austrian composer known for his pioneering work in 20th and 21st-century classical music. His style frequently employed microtonality – using intervals smaller than traditional semitones – spectralism, and complex textures often described as “pointillistic,” creating dense, shimmering soundscapes. He explored concepts of static harmony and non-traditional forms, significantly influencing film scores, notably Stanley Kubrick’s *2001: A Space Odyssey*.
The Elbphilharmonie itself opened in January 2017 after a decade of construction and significant cost overruns. Built atop an existing warehouse structure (the Kaispeicher A) in the HafenCity district, it quickly became a landmark architectural achievement. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, its distinctive glass facade and wave-like roof are intended to reflect light and the surrounding harbor environment.
