The church's design incorporates elements of both Mannerism and Rococo styles, visible in its ornate interior detailing and façade. Built upon foundations potentially dating back to earlier structures, it replaced a previous chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Estrela (Our Lady of the Star).
