Chucho Valdés is scheduled to perform at the Gaillard Center in Charleston, South Carolina on October 20, 2026. Valdés is a Cuban pianist, composer, and bandleader internationally recognized as one of the most influential figures in modern Afro-Cuban jazz. His music blends traditional Cuban rhythms – *son*, *danzón*, *rumba* – with elements of jazz, classical music, and other global influences. He is known for his virtuosic piano playing, complex arrangements, and energetic performances. Valdés began his career with the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna and later gained prominence as a founding member of the groundbreaking band Irakere, which fused Cuban and jazz idioms. He has received multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards throughout his solo career.

The Gaillard Center, opened in 2015, serves as Charleston’s premier performing arts venue. It replaced the original Gaillard Auditorium built in 1932, which had become structurally unsound. The current building is a multi-purpose facility designed to accommodate a variety of performances including orchestral concerts, Broadway shows, dance performances, and contemporary music acts.
