Chucho Valdés is a legendary Cuban pianist, composer, and bandleader renowned for his pioneering contributions to Afro-Cuban jazz. Born in Havana in 1941 into a musical family—his father Bebo Valdés was also a celebrated pianist—Chucho developed a distinctive style that seamlessly blends traditional Cuban rhythms with jazz improvisation. His virtuosic technique and innovative arrangements have made him a central figure in Latin jazz for over five decades.

Valdés co-founded the influential group Irakere in 1973, which revolutionized Cuban music by fusing jazz, rock, classical, and Afro-Cuban folkloric elements. The band earned international acclaim, including a Grammy Award in 1980 for Best Latin Recording. Throughout his solo career, Chucho has released numerous albums showcasing his mastery of piano and composition, earning multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards.

His music is characterized by complex rhythms, vibrant melodies, and an infectious energy that captures the spirit of Cuba’s rich cultural heritage.
