The Academy of St Martin in the Fields will perform at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany on January 8, 2027. The Academy is renowned for its historically informed performance practice and distinctive string sound, often characterized by clarity, precision, and a warm tonal quality. Originally established in 1958 by Neville Marriner, the ensemble began as a chamber orchestra focused on Baroque and Classical repertoire but has since expanded its range to encompass music from the 18th through 20th centuries. They are particularly noted for their interpretations of composers like Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Beethoven.

The Elbphilharmonie itself opened in January 2017 after a decade of construction and significant cost overruns. Built atop an existing warehouse (the Kaispeicher A) on Hamburg’s HafenCity, it has quickly become a landmark architectural achievement. Its design, by Herzog & de Meuron, features a glass façade constructed above a brick base. The concert hall within is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics, achieved through the innovative “White Skin” interior design by Yasuhisa Toyota – a system of individually shaped gypsum fiber panels.
