Classical Concerts in Salzburg

Experience Vienna Philharmonic live on August 30th

The Vienna Philharmonic will perform at the Felsenreitschule in Salzburg, Austria on August 30, 2026. The orchestra is renowned for its distinctive warm, richly layered sound, characterized by the use of Viennese instruments and a traditional playing style emphasizing individual expression within a cohesive ensemble. Historically rooted in the court orchestras of the Habsburg monarchy, the Vienna Philharmonic maintains a self-governance structure unique among major orchestras, with members actively involved in artistic and administrative decisions. Their repertoire spans from the classical period through contemporary works, with a particular emphasis on composers like Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Strauss.

The Felsenreitschule (“Rock Theatre”) is an open-air theatre carved into the Mönchsberg mountain in Salzburg. Originally constructed in 1926 for Salzburg Festival performances of Richard Strauss’ *Jedermann*, it was designed to resemble a natural rock formation. During World War II, the space was used as a storage facility for artworks looted by the Nazis; these were later recovered there. The venue has since become a prominent location for opera, concerts and theatrical productions during the Salzburg Festival and at other times throughout the year.
