The Vienna Philharmonic is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost orchestras, renowned for its distinctive warm sound and Viennese tradition. Founded in 1842 by Otto Nicolai, it uniquely operates as a self-governing body; musicians select new members and manage the orchestra themselves. Unlike many ensembles, membership is by audition only and typically involves lengthy periods playing with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra first.

The orchestra’s repertoire centers on the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, and Strauss – composers deeply rooted in Viennese musical history. However, they regularly perform music from all eras. A hallmark is their annual New Year’s Concert, broadcast globally to over 50 countries and reaching millions – a tradition begun in 1939.

Throughout its history, the Philharmonic has collaborated with virtually every major conductor, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Riccardo Muti. They've released hundreds of recordings and maintain a rigorous touring schedule. Notably, the orchestra possesses a unique collection of instruments – including historically informed string instruments – contributing to its signature tone. They have received numerous accolades including Gramophone's Orchestra of the Year in 2023.
