Heinz Hall, originally known as the Loew’s Penn Theatre, opened in 1927 as a movie palace during the height of the atmospheric theatre movement. Designed by architects William H. Gable and Frederick C. Musser, it was renowned for its opulent interior designed to evoke a Renaissance Italian courtyard under a starlit sky. The building underwent extensive renovations in the 1960s to transform it into a performing arts center and became the permanent home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 1971.
