Experience Spanish Harlem Orchestra live on August 15th
Spanish Harlem Orchestra is scheduled to perform at Lackawanna Station in Montclair, New Jersey on August 15, 2026. The group is recognized for its dedication to preserving and performing traditional salsa dura, a hard-hitting, brass-focused style of salsa rooted in the sounds of 1970s New York City. Their music features intricate arrangements, powerful vocals, and a strong emphasis on improvisation within the established salsa framework. Founded in 2000 by pianist Ricky González, the orchestra aims to recapture the energy and spirit of iconic salsa orchestras like those led by Tito Puente and Celia Cruz.
Lackawanna Station, originally opened in 1913, served as a major transportation hub for the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. Designed in a Beaux-Arts style by architect William J. Palmer, it was once a bustling gateway connecting Montclair with New York City and beyond. Passenger rail service ceased in 1985; however, the building was subsequently repurposed. Following a period of disuse and potential demolition threats, it underwent extensive renovations and now functions as a mixed-use space incorporating retail businesses and event venues.
