OPAL – Oper am Luisenpark is a relatively new operatic venue in Mannheim, opening in 2021. It distinguishes itself as Germany’s first fully automated opera house, employing robotic stage technology to facilitate rapid set changes and complex scene transitions. The venue is located within the Luisenpark, one of Germany’s most popular urban parks, offering a unique setting for operatic performances. Designed by architects Staab Architekten, OPAL was conceived as a flexible space capable of hosting both large-scale opera productions and smaller-scale musical events. Its technical infrastructure allows for experimentation with multimedia integration in performances.
