Originally built as a daughter house of Maulbronn Monastery, Limburg Abbey flourished for over four centuries before being dissolved during the Palatinate church dissolution in 1560 under Otto Henry, Elector Palatine. Following secularization, the buildings were repurposed; parts served as a quarry providing stone for local construction.

Today, the Klosterruine Limburg is maintained as a historical monument and frequently used as an atmospheric venue for cultural events including open-air concerts and theatrical performances.
