The State Theatre originally opened in 1921 as the Hennepin Theatre. Designed by Liebenberg & Kaplan, it was initially a venue for vaudeville and motion pictures. The theatre underwent extensive restoration work in the 1970s, returning it to much of its original architectural grandeur – a blend of Italian Renaissance and Baroque styles – including ornate plasterwork, crystal chandeliers and velvet furnishings. It is now part of the Hennepin Theatre District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The venue’s acoustics are considered favorable for a variety of musical genres due to its design and ongoing maintenance.
