Orchester der Komischen Oper Berlin will perform a concert at Flughafen Tempelhof in Berlin on September 18, 2026. The orchestra is renowned for its versatility, frequently performing operatic repertoire alongside symphonic works and contemporary compositions. While rooted in the traditions of German Romanticism and classical music, the orchestra regularly embraces 20th and 21st-century pieces, often showcasing works connected to the Komische Oper’s innovative productions. They are known for a particularly clear and dynamic sound, reflecting the ensemble’s collaborative approach under its current General Music Director, Ainārs Rubiķis.
Flughafen Tempelhof holds significant historical and cultural importance for Berlin. Opened in 1929, it was one of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced airports of its time. During the Cold War, Tempelhof became a crucial lifeline for West Berlin during the Soviet blockade of 1948-1949, famously supplied by the “Rosinenbomber” (Raisin Bombers) delivering essential goods. Following German reunification, its role as an airport diminished and it closed in 2008.
