Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin is scheduled to perform at Tivoli Vredenburg in Utrecht, Netherlands on April 28, 2027. Ronin’s music is characterized as ritual music—a largely acoustic sound blending elements of jazz, contemporary classical music, and Japanese aesthetics. The compositions emphasize repetitive structures, subtle dynamic shifts, and a focus on timbre and space. Bärtsch refers to his approach as “functional music,” intending to create immersive sonic environments rather than traditional song forms. The ensemble typically features piano, percussion, bass clarinet, and drums, often employing prepared piano techniques and extended instrumental techniques.

Tivoli Vredenburg is a prominent concert venue in Utrecht, opening in 2009. It consolidated several existing venues – Tivoli Castle, Vredenburg Music Centre and Pandora – into a single complex designed by architect Kees Christiaanse of Mecanoo. The building houses five halls of varying sizes: the Grote Zaal (Great Hall), the Ronda hall (primarily for pop and rock), the Hertz hall (smaller pop/rock), the Leeuwerik (dedicated to jazz & smaller acts) and the Cloud Nine bar/venue.
