Heinz Hall originally opened in 1924 as the Loew’s Penn Theatre, a lavish movie palace designed by William H. Gable. The building showcased opulent architecture reflecting the era’s fascination with European Renaissance and Baroque styles. In 1979, after years of declining attendance as a cinema, it was extensively renovated and repurposed as a performing arts center, becoming the permanent home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The hall's acoustics were carefully redesigned during this transformation to suit symphonic music. It is recognized as a significant example of atmospheric theatre architecture and remains a landmark building in downtown Pittsburgh. The hall seats approximately 2,600 patrons.
