Konzerthausorchester Berlin is renowned for its historically informed performance practice, particularly of 19th and 20th-century repertoire. While capable of performing music from across the orchestral canon, the orchestra frequently focuses on composers like Mahler, Bruckner, and Hindemith, often striving for a sound reflecting the compositional intent based on scholarly research. The orchestra was founded in 1952 as the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin and underwent several name changes before becoming the Konzerthausorchester Berlin in 1994.
Konzerthaus Berlin itself opened in 1821 as the Schauspielhaus, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It quickly became a central venue for musical performances, though initially primarily for opera and theatre. Following damage during World War II, it was meticulously reconstructed and reopened in 1984 as a concert hall. The building is noted for its neoclassical architecture and excellent acoustics, stemming from its horseshoe-shaped design inspired by ancient Greek theatres. It’s considered one of Berlin’s most important cultural landmarks and is home to Konzerthausorchester Berlin as well as hosting guest orchestras and ensembles.
