The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, opened in 1990 as a major performing arts center for the city. Designed by architect Takamitsu Katayama, the complex comprises three halls: the Main Hall (a proscenium theatre seating approximately 834), the Play Hall (a smaller, more intimate space), and the Concert Hall (designed specifically for orchestral performances with a capacity of around 1,999). The theatre hosts a diverse range of performances including opera, ballet, theatre productions, concerts of various genres – classical, contemporary and popular – and dance. It serves as a significant venue for both domestic and international artists and productions. The theatre is operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture.
