Experience Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester live on August 22nd
Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (GMJO) will perform at the Felsenreitschule in Salzburg, Austria on August 22, 2026. The orchestra is renowned for its interpretation of late-Romantic and early 20th-century orchestral works, with a particular focus on the compositions of Gustav Mahler himself, though their repertoire extends to other composers of the period like Bruckner and Shostakovich. Founded in 1970 by Leonard Bernstein, the GMJO brings together highly talented young musicians under the age of 26 from across Europe, offering them a unique platform for artistic development and performance experience.
The Felsenreitschule, meaning “rock arena school,” is a historically significant open-air theatre carved directly into the Mönchsberg mountain in Salzburg. Originally constructed in 1926 for Salzburg Festival performances requiring larger staging than the existing theatres allowed, it was designed by architect Clemens Holzmeister. Its unique acoustics and dramatic setting have made it a favoured venue for opera, drama, and concerts ever since. During World War II, the space was used as a storage facility for artworks looted by the Nazis; some were recovered there after the war.
