The Teatro Alcalá opened in 1926 as a cinema, initially named Cine Alcalá Palace. Throughout its history it has functioned as both a cinema and a performance space. In 2014 it underwent extensive renovations to become primarily a theatre dedicated to live performance including musical theatre, concerts and dance. The venue is noted for its intimate atmosphere with a capacity of approximately 800 seats and its restored Art Deco interior details. It’s location within the Retiro neighborhood makes it a significant cultural hub within Madrid. The theatre is owned by the Ayuntamiento de Madrid (Madrid City Council).
