Carl Orff (1895-1982) was a German composer best known for his *Carmina Burana* (1937), a cantata based on medieval poems. His musical style is frequently characterized by its rhythmic drive, use of ostinato – repeating musical phrases – and incorporation of primal, elemental forces. While drawing on earlier music, including Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony, Orff developed a distinctly modern sound often described as theatrical and powerfully percussive. He frequently employed large orchestral and choral forces.
