Originally built by the Esparbes family, it underwent significant modifications in the 17th and 18th centuries under the ownership of the Hautefort family. The château features distinctive architectural elements including sculpted chimneys and a formal French garden.

Throughout its history, Château de Montal has served as both a residence and a defensive structure. It fell into disrepair during the 20th century but was subject to extensive restoration work beginning in the 1990s led by Yves Plusquellec.
