Antony Hermus is a Dutch conductor and composer known for a repertoire spanning a broad range of orchestral works, with a particular focus on late-Romantic and 20th/21st-century music. His compositional style often incorporates dramatic flair and textural complexity, drawing comparisons to composers like Mahler and Shostakovich, while maintaining a distinctly contemporary voice. He frequently champions lesser-known works alongside established classics.
City Halls, Glasgow, opened in 1909 following a design competition won by Lanarkshire architects Clarke & Bell. Originally conceived as a municipal building housing council offices and a public hall, it quickly became renowned for its exceptional acoustics. The main hall, the City Hall Auditorium, boasts a horseshoe-shaped gallery layout inspired by the Musikverein in Vienna – considered one of the finest concert halls globally – and features similar wooden construction intended to enhance sound quality.
Throughout its history, City Halls has hosted diverse performances including orchestral concerts, chamber music recitals, choral events and popular music performances. It underwent significant refurbishment in the early 2000s to improve facilities while preserving its original architectural character and acoustic properties.
