Heinz Ratz (born Heinz-Ludwig Rathjen, 1933-2010) was a German composer, pianist, and sound engineer renowned for his pioneering work in electronic music, particularly *musique concrète*. Beginning in the 1950s, Ratz initially studied classical piano but quickly gravitated towards experimental sound manipulation. He established a private studio in Hamburg, equipped with self-built tape recorders and oscillators, becoming a central figure in the nascent German electronic music scene.

Ratz’s compositions often incorporated found sounds – everyday noises transformed into musical elements – alongside synthesized tones. His style is characterized by abstract textures, rhythmic complexity, and a distinctly spatial quality achieved through multi-track tape manipulation. Key works include *Ionisation* (1968), influenced by Edgard Varèse, and numerous contributions to West German radio productions throughout the 60s and 70s.

Though largely overlooked during his lifetime outside of specialist circles, Ratz's influence on later generations of electronic musicians is increasingly recognized. Posthumous releases of his archival material have garnered critical acclaim, cementing his status as a significant precursor to ambient and experimental electronic genres.
